Why focusing solely on lap time hurts performance

Uncategorized Oct 19, 2020
Laptimes are not the end all be all of racing. A fast laptime, while important, does not guarantee a win. Average laptime is really the determining factor in success in a racing environment.
A lot of times when I'm working with people coaching, I see that they are target fixated on a lap time they want to achieve. It's good to have a target to be working towards and a measurement to put yourself up against, however it should not determine whether or not you've "succeeded" at your day.
Track conditions are continually changing, they can change as much as 1 second in a day! If you are solely focused on laptime you'll end up over driving the car and not performing to the highest capability in that moment in time.
I work hard to focus on improving driving skill in each outing. The goal in driving around a track is to improve. Focusing on skill helps achieve the laptime goals, and makes it more repeatable and consistent. Going back to the initial point, in racing it doesn't

How understanding Mechanics helps your driving

Uncategorized Oct 16, 2020
Understanding the mechanics behind the vehicle you’re driving is one of the ways to more efficiently maximize the performance.
Theoretical or practical experience in terms of mechanics is very useful when applying yourself in a Motorsports environment. When you’re driving, understanding the limitations of the tire, suspension, and engine is one of the first step to taking advantage of all that the vehicle has to offer to you.
A tire is a good example of this in action. Tires are really good at taking one input. When you combine inputs into the tire - turning and heavy braking for example - the tire can become over loaded and this is when you struggle to turn the car. This is why we “trail brake” having high initial pressure and releasing off as you get further into the turn. A conceptual understanding of the friction limitations helps in using the tire to its max.

Outlasting the Competition

Uncategorized Oct 15, 2020
Outlasting the competition is the way you're sure to get to the top of where you want to be. This is something you hear over and over again. There's no shortcut to the top, there's no overnight success. In anything you want to achieve the fight is between you and yourself on if you want to keep moving forward.
"It's not about how hard you hit, it's how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward."
Think to that moment in Rocky, Apollo Creed is hounding him, 14 rounds in. He thinks he's won it. But what happens? He turns around, Rocky is getting back up. The look of joy disappears because he knows, I've given this guy everything I've got and he's still coming back.
This is what you've got to do in your life. Show it, you don't care what it's going to throw at you. You don't back down. Keep pushing to the end. When you get there you'll be way further than you ever thought possible

Consistency is Key

Uncategorized Oct 13, 2020
Consistency is key - the things that you want to improve on in your driving can only be done so when you’ve got a base line to compare to! This means getting to a point where you’re able to replicate lap after lap the same thing, make small adjustments, improve, and move onto the next bit.
This goes for anything you might want to achieve - continued work on the same thing - putting in the reps is so crucial to making progress towards where you want to be! There’s a term I’ve become familiar with, compound pounding. The idea is that over time your small progress builds up to create a large result. Think about water cutting through rock over thousands of years. The result you want is on the other side of the monotony of continual work!
For me, this has been a struggle in my writing and posting with social media. You can see a number of times this year I’ve made an effort to be more consistent and engage at a larger level! This is a challenge as I naturally am a more private p

Dealing with Adversity in Motorsports

Uncategorized Oct 11, 2020
Things don't always go your way in Motorsports. It's a high risk - high reward sport we put ourselves into. There are extremely high highs that can be followed almost immediately by the lowest of lows! The thing is, you've got to go through the lows, take the lessons you can from them and take that into the highs.
In 2009 I went to Egypt for my first international competition. This was at the time when I was just in between shifting from good to great in my driving skill level. I had made it to the Rotax World Finals, which had been a dream of mine for a number of years. The racing was unlike anything I had really experienced before. There were 70+ of the best drivers from all around the world and everyone drove like it. For me, it was crazy as I was still understanding who I was as a driver and honestly didn't have quite the confidence I was supposed to be there... However in that moment all you can do is proceed forward
The races were tough, in this event you had a collec
